How do you ensure you don't hit your plumbing pipe when installing a cabinet or shelf?

Since you can't see through your walls the only 100% effective way is to remove the drywall, but most of us would cringe at removing and then repairing the wall. What a time waster! 

Generally, you can use simple stud finder that you can buy from your local hardware store to locate studs in the wall, if you secure to a stud and don't use anything longer than 1 1/2 inch inside the wall you can be sure you won't hit anything, plumbing or electrical.

If you must, you can also cut a small hole in the wall that will hopefully be covered by whatever you are installing and take a look around to make sure there is nothing in the way.

You would be surprised how many people don't follow this simple tip and cause major problems.
